Tips for University Students

Posted on Sunday 30 March 2014

I'm a fashion student … Really, it's not nearly as glamorous as it sounds. I am now officially in my third year of University, and it kind of scares me how soon I will be shoved into the real world. I guess since I've been at University for a while now I am able to share some valuable experiences and thoughts on what it's like to be a fashion student.

1. The Degree - When I say I am a fashion student, most people get the image of me doing frivolous tasks or instantly want to know if I judge everyones outfits. Yeah that's really not what a career in fashion is about. I've always been interested in fashion and wanted to do something creative, but didn't see myself as a designer. I discovered that through a degree of Creative Industries, with a major in Fashion and a second major in business (public relations for me) I could enjoy the creative side but still had some structure with the business major.

If you are interested in a career in fashion but are unsure of what you want to do exactly, I'd suggest just starting somewhere and seeing where it takes you. I didn't even know what public relations (PR) was when I enrolled, but turns out I really love it and can't wait to make a career out of it.

2. The Expectations - You know in those American movies where everyone in College/University parties 24/7 and makes a heap of friends and oh studying is just so fun.. University is not like that (not here in Australia anyway). In my first year of University, many people I know were really disappointed with their University experience. Don't go to Uni thinking it's going to be this awesome party where you're going to make friends for life, I'm not saying it can't be like that, but if you go to Uni with the simple expectation of learning and coming out with a degree you won't be disappointed. For me, Uni definitely didn't turn out to be a social thing. I drive into Uni for my classes only and can never get out of there fast enough afterwards. My degree is very flexible, so if I make friends in my classes I only really know them for three months and rarely see them again.

3. Should I go to University? - I grew up in South Africa, where University was pretty much a right of passage into the 'grown up' world. So after completing school in Australia, I never gave it much thought, I simply went to University. I've learnt that University isn't for everyone, I know a few people who want to, or have dropped out. And that's okay, because in this century you really don't have to have a bachelor to make a good life for yourself. I'm not saying don't go to University, even though I find going to class dreadful and never look forward to being at Uni, I'm sticking to it because I know what I want to achieve in the end. Really it's all about your personality and what you want to do with your life.

4. I'm at Uni, what now? - My main tip for University would be organisation! The majority of full time students complete four units per semester. And for each unit you would have anywhere between two and four pieces of assessment. All of this within roughly just over three months can get quite intense. I like to go through the assessment for each of my units in the beginning of the semester and keep note in my diary for when everything is due. I would say always go to class, but honestly I've skipped classes many times. I just always make sure that I catch up on what I skip, always watch a lecture online if you've missed it. Once you start falling behind, the whole semester becomes very stressful. It is especially important to stay organised and on track if you are working while at Uni.

Last but not least I just want to state the importance of work experience if you are wanting to go into a creative industry. It is hard to find an entry level job that does not ask for some sort of experience in the field. This is totally unfair but it's just the harsh reality we live in. I'd suggest doing internships and work experience during the holidays. Last year I wrote a post on my interning experience that you can read here.

I hope that my experiences can be valuable to someone out there, if I missed out on something or you have a specific question don't hesitate to ask in the comment section!

The Iconic x River Island VAMFF Runway Show

Posted on Wednesday 26 March 2014

European fashion brand, River Island and Australian online retailer, The Iconic launched their collaboration last week at Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival

River Island has been available to Australian shoppers through Asos for some time, but The Iconic is putting a twist on things. The Iconic and River Island hosted a runway show at VAMFF, which could be shopped as soon as the show went live, with three hour delivery in Sydney and Melbourne to top it all off.

Internationally known, Melbourne based model, Ajak Deng led the show. Followed by a fierce line up of models head to toe in the latest trends, which were all readily available for consumers to buy on The Iconic. The show marked the launch of The Iconic's 3 hour delivery in Melbourne (which is already available in Sydney). Within the first two hours of the show going live, 500 pieces of the River Island collection had been sold. River Island offers stylish and unique pieces. The brand appeals to on trend, fast fashion consumers, with affordable pieces mostly ranging under AU$100.

The outfits are still available and be shopped on The Iconic's website, where each look is displayed in an easy to understand layout.  Mix and match your favourite pieces to create your own outfit, or simply buy the whole look.

My Fitness Routine

Posted on Sunday 16 March 2014

I try to live an active lifestyle and keep fit, but my workout routine really depends on how I'm feeling that week or month. As with any routine, once I start exercising regularly it's easy to stay on the right track, but as soon I fall off the wagon, its hard to get back into a routine again. Today I wanted to do a post on my workout routine that I aim for weekly.

WORKOUT

Once or twice a week (depending on how busy my week is), I like to go to a group personal training session. The group I go to is held in my local park and costs $15 per session. If you have a look on the internet you will most likely find many of these PT groups in your area, it's simply about mustering up the courage to go there (TIP: Take a friend with the first time you go so you feel more comfortable).

Where I go, there are two type of classes; boxing (which is boxing and cardio mixed together) and HIIT (high intensity interval training, which incorporates weights). I really enjoy both of these classes, and being in a group pushes you to keep going when you want to stop. These classes are my main workouts for the week, as I can't slack off or stop whenever I want.

Aside from the group training sessions, I workout at home three- to four time a week. I like to workout with Youtube videos as I enjoy these workouts more than simply running or jogging. I do these workouts for 20 to 30 minutes, mixing videos. These are just a few of my favourite videos:

I love Jillian Michaels' videos as they get my heart rate going. I also like Cassey Ho's pilates videos for core strengthening. For beginners, Lionsgate Be Fit channel is a great place to start as there is a variety of videos from various trainers, so you can really see what type of workouts you like.

EQUIPMENT

You don't need a fully equipped home gym to workout at home. Honestly you could probably get by with things found in your home, I've seen people substitute weights with bottles filled with sand, or heavy books. If you are willing to spend some money on equipment these are a few things that I would suggest for starting off:

  • Yoga matt
  • Dumbbells [a lighter pair (3kg) and a heavier pair (8kg)]
  • Resistance bands
  • Kettle bell

TIME

I think everyone is different when it comes to the most appropriate time to workout. I personally prefer working out in the mornings, mostly because if I don't get my workout over with early, I don't do it. However there are many benefits of working out early, including more energy and a faster metabolism throughout the day.

SHOULD I EAT?

Since I like to workout early, I don't have a full breakfast before working out. Usually like to have a banana before my workout, just so I don't get dizzy or faint, and then I'll have a protein rich breakfast after my workout.

I am in no way a professional when it comes to fitness or health, these are purely suggestions based on my personal findings.

Flat Tummy Tea Review

Posted on Wednesday 12 March 2014

Thanks to genetics, I have received my mothers fussy metabolism. I haven't been able to pinpoint the food group that is causing my problems, as I am far too uncommitted to give up any food.

Once I started Fit Feb and decided to be more mindful of what I eat, I thought why not try a tea-tox. This is a detox where you drink tea for x amount of time, as this flushes out toxins and cleanses your body. While on a tea-tox you still get to eat food, its not like a juice-tox where you only consume liquid.

If you are on social media I'm sure you've seen stories from companies such a Skinny Me Tea, claiming that the tea will help you lose weight and become skinny. That's not the type of tea I was looking for, so I settled on Flat Tummy Tea, which basically just claims to reduce bloating and boost energy levels, making you feel better from the inside out. You have a choice of a two- or four week time period. You will receive two types of tea, the 'Everyday Flat Tummy' tea, is consumed once daily for the duration of your tea-tox. This tea works best if you have it first thing in the morning as it claims to increase your metabolism, calm your stomach and boosts energy levels.

The second tea, 'Flat Tummy Afresh', is taken every second day, in the evening. This tea does have a mild laxative effect due to its ingredients, but its not going to make you run to the toilet. It simply aids in digestion and stimulates bowel movements.

Overall I enjoyed the tea-tox, I like drinking tea and enjoyed the taste. I didn't SEE a change in my body, but I did feel different. I had more energy and didn't get a sore stomach as often. I would definitely do a tea-tox again.
